Insurance & Billing FAQ

Q: Are prenatal, weaning, or starting solids visits covered?

A: Yes! If your questions are related to feeding or lactation, your visits are covered—whether that’s before birth or during weaning.

Q: How many appointments do I get?

A: Every family’s needs are different, and visits are usually covered as long as they’re medically necessary, so there isn’t a strict limit to appointments.

Some plans have limits:

  • Aetna/Tricare: 3–6 visits

  • California Doula: ~18 visits plus birth

Q: Will I have to pay anything out of pocket?

A: It depends on your plan. Many plans look at lactation as preventative care, but others include cost sharing. The best way to know is to call your plan and check in with our Patient Relations team.

Q: How do I check if lactation visits are covered?

A: Call your plan and ask about code S9443 with diagnosis Z39.1 (“care of lactating parent”). Even if it isn’t fully covered, part of your visit may be.

Q: Are home visits covered?

A: Yes. The medical portion is covered by insurance. There may be a small non-medical travel fee, separate from any insurance costs.

Q: Do you have home or office appointments in my area?

A: Check our Provider Map to see if someone is nearby. If not, don’t worry—we offer telehealth visits nationwide and can also see if there are additional providers not on the map by contacting Patient Relations.

Q: Is my plan in-network with you?

A: Most likely, yes! Sometimes we’re listed under a larger network name, which can be confusing. Our Patient Relations team can double-check for you.

We know insurance can feel overwhelming. You don’t have to figure it out alone—our Patient Relations team is here to help you every step of the way.
